An Ohio native, Jim was raised in the 1960s and 1970s by parents who loved to share their passion for food and wine. Study in Europe and two years’ teaching agriculture as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire (Congo) led to his desire to grow grapes. 

On return to the U.S. in the late 1970s, he worked at Ohio and Virginia wineries. He became intrigued with both the idea of virgin terroir and being part of a new winegrowing region. He saw this opportunity on the cool high elevation Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Virginia. Linden Vineyards continues to remain true to discovering its terroir and keeping winemaking ego-free.
