Pat was born and raised in a small town in northern Wisconsin. She received her BA degree from the University of Wisconsin and her MBA at Duke University. For 35 years Pat worked in software development at IBM. She retired in 2005, one year after she and her husband Clyde had begun to establish an organic vineyard on abandoned farm property in the Yadkin Valley in North Carolina. In 2008 Carolina Heritage received its first organic certification, which has been maintained since. To become more knowledgeable in winemaking while developing the vineyard and building a winery, Pat and Clyde took classes and received Associate Degrees in Viticulture and Enology at Surry Community College in Dobson, NC. Pat remains the winemaker for Carolina Heritage Winery and earns numerous medals on her wines every year. In 2011 they added a photovoltaic system to the winery and in 2017 a solar hot water/heating system. Currently with 12 acres of grapes planted from 14 different varieties, Carolina Heritage Vineyard remains strong and Pat and Clyde continue to be devoted to farming and living sustainably.
