Co-Founder and Winemaker

Mark Wenzel is the co-founder and winemaker of August Hill Winery and Illinois Sparkling Co. After recognizing that the high-acid, low-tannin hybrid grapes grown in Illinois were well suited for Traditional Method sparkling wine, Mark began producing bottle-fermented sparkling wines in 2007. To distinguish these wines from August Hill Winery’s still and carbonated wines, Mark and Teri Wenzel launched Illinois Sparkling Co. in 2011. 

Today, Mark continues to craft award-winning Traditional Method sparkling wines while also exploring other sparkling styles, including Pét-Nat and Charmat. A passionate advocate for Midwest sparkling wine made from hybrid grapes, he enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences with fellow winemakers to help elevate the quality and recognition of sparkling wines produced throughout the region.
