Eric is a second generation owner/vineyard manager at Linganore Winecellars. The Aellen family started growing grapes in 1972 after purchasing a dairy farm in the rolling hills of Mount Airy, MD. After finishing college, he came back to the farm to take over the vineyards. Over the last 28 years the vineyard has expanded to over 75 acres with a diverse mix of hybrids and viniferas. Eric is actively involved with the Maryland Wine Association and Maryland Farm Bureau. His grapes have been used to produce award winning wines in the state, including Alberino, Cab Franc, Chambourcin, Traminette and Saperavi to name a few.

Thomas Bachelder

Although Thomas and his wife Mary make wine in Oregon and Niagara as well, Burgundy is Thomas’ spiritual home – the sacred ground where the Chardonnay and Pinot noir grapes first evolved, then happily grew and acclimatized. There Thomas works, where possible, with organic vignerons to ensure that the local sense of place is best expressed. The same is true for Niagara and Oregon. The Bachelder vineyards stretch from Nuits-Saint Georges in the north, through Beaune, heading south to Puligny-Montrachet. Bachelder has rented very modest cellars just outside of Beaune and leads a Garagiste-like existence. In Niagara, they work with growers all along the “Bench” from St. David’s through Vineland to Beamsville (where they rent cellars), and in Oregon, they work mostly with fruit from the Yamhill-Carlton Appellation, and can be found making their wine at the Carlton Winemaker’s Studio. Wherever he works, Thomas crafts wines that sing of their origins with as little “make-up” as possible – wines that are finely-perfumed and tightly-wound, offering the classic refined fruit and textured minerality of the best terroirs, whether grown in the Limestone-laced Burgundian earth, with the silty calcerous Espcarpment soils in Niagara, or the complex sedimentary and volcanic-derived soils of Oregon. The Three Terroirs series is now making nearly 15 different Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made by Thomas in Burgundy, Niagara and Oregon!

Peter, a Canadian native, was the winemaker at Fox Run Vineyards from 1995-2022. He holds degrees in Enology from Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, Australia and in Anthropology from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. He worked as a winemaker in Australia and New Zealand before landing in the Finger Lakes region of New York in 1990 to be head winemaker at Dr. Frank’s. He was also an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University and lectured to wine industry professionals throughout the world.

Peter is also a member of the EWE Program Advisory Board. He retired from full-time winemaking in 2022 and is active as a consultant to wineries in the eastern U.S.

Tim is a native of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York who grew up around his grandfather’s vineyards. His early formal training was in the field of music but other than an inspired period as a traveling musician, he brought the creative sensibilities of a musician to the craft of winemaking. Tim has 30+ years experience in the grape and wine industry. Throughout his career, he has crafted many award-winning wines from vinifera, hybrid, and native varieties, specializing in dessert wines like port, sherry, late harvest and ice wines. In recent years he has expanded his portfolio to include formula wines, hard cider, and wine spritzers. Tim is an experienced project and production manager and has judged wines in several international competitions.

He has quickly become one of the state’s most award winning winemakers. In just 11 short years his wines have won 6 Governors Cups, 1 Keystone Cup and a 2019 Best of Show from the American Wine Society. Today, of the 300+ wineries in PA, Seven Mountains Wine Cellars ranks 18th in terms of production.

Corry Craighill began her winemaking career in 2011 as an intern at Blenheim Vineyards. This internship led her to travel and work in other wine regions around the globe including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France, California, and Oregon. Back in her home state of Virginia, she spent two years as assistant winemaker for both Blenheim and King Family. She was the head winemaker for four vintages at Sunset Hills Vineyard in Loudoun County. In 2020 she returned to the Monticello AVA as the winemaker and vineyard manager for Septenary Winery located in Greenwood, VA.

Carlo is the former owner of the Hudson-Chatham Winery and the author of more than 20 books. He has edited and written on wines, beers, and spirits. His authors include Kevin Zraly, Oz Clarke, Matt Kramer, Tom Stevenson, the New York Times, and Wine Spectator among others. He has been profiled in Beverage Media, the Wall Street Journal, Edible Hudson Valley, Hudson Valley magazine, and many other journals and magazines. He is a member of the New York Wine Media Guild, a contributor to The Cork Report and edits the blog East Coast Wineries. His winery’s Paperbirch line of sherries are made using a 20 barrel solera and have won numerous awards.

Steve DiFrancesco

Steve became fascinated with wine while working in a restaurant during college and became the wine specialist there. He graduated with a BS in Plant Science from Stetson University, entered the wine business in the Finger Lakes of New York, and has since enjoyed 42 harvests there (plus one in Chile).

Steve worked with Guy DeVaux and Charles Fournier at Gold Seal Vineyards (owned by Seagram’s), with their excellent sparkling wines, from the late ‘70’s to the mid ‘80’s. He then worked with high quality red hybrids at Bully Hill Vineyards, and became an assistant winemaker at Glenora Wine Cellars in the late ‘80’s. He became winemaker at Lucas Vineyards in the early ‘90’s and helped expand production in high quality sparkling and still wines.

Steve returned to Glenora in 1995 and has helped expand its reputation and production. In 2000, the owners of Glenora purchased Knapp Winery, and Steve was responsible for production at both wineries. Riesling is at the forefront of a broad production line, including sparkling wines, red and white viniferas, as well as hybrids and natives.

During Steve’s career he has been involved in scale-ups, scale-backs, acquisitions, start-ups, and shutdowns. His wines have won over 450 gold medals in regional, national, and international competitions. He has made over 40 professional presentations in the Northeast and Midwest.

He has judged in wine competitions from California to New York to Virginia. In 2022, Steve was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Eastern Winery Exposition. He is also a board member for the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association. Steve retired during the summer of 2021, and is now available as a winemaking consultant.

David is executive director of the American Wine Society, the oldest and largest organization of wine consumers in the U.S. He serves as publisher of the AWS’s two publications, the AWS Wine Journal and AWS News. A longtime wine writer, he continues to write a weekly wine column for several publications in Pennsylvania and New York that are part of Times-Shamrock Communication. David has a Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from the Kania School of Management at the University of Scranton and he teaches bartending and bar management at Luzerne County Community College. He is a member of the Order des Compagnons du Beaujolais. For several years he was an elector in the Vintners Hall of Fame in Napa Valley.

Matthieu was born in Crozes Hermitage in the Rhone Valley of France. Coming from a family of viticulturists and wine lovers, Matthieu was predisposed to continue his family’s pursuit of making and enjoying wine. He first studied viticulture and oenology at Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy. After graduating in 1995, Matthieu worked in many different wine regions around France including Rhone Valley, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence, and Jura. He then worked in Italy and South Africa to gain experience around the world before settling in Virginia. Since arriving in 2003, Matthieu has worked with wineries throughout the state and, more recently, is a founding member of the Winemakers’ Research Exchange and Board Member of the Monticello Wine Trail. He enjoys being active in the local winemaking community and challenging his skills through experimental design at King Family, working with different terroir at Turk Mountain Vineyards, which he currently manages, and partnering with his brother to establish and expand Domaine Finot in two regions in France.

Joseph has over 30 years of academic and industry experience in research and extension in viticulture, small fruit culture, and enology. He is currently a professor and specialist in Viticulture and Small Fruit for the University of Maryland. He also has been awarded 12 patents for small fruit variety development and has extensive experience fermenting berry and fruit wines.

David is a plant pathologist at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY. His research has focused on pathogen ecology and epidemiology over the last 35 years in a variety of fruit crops, including apples, strawberries, and grapes. His most current research area deals with how light, both visible and UV, can be used to suppress plant diseases. He has successfully used shortwave UV to control powdery mildews and certain arthropod pests on a number of specialty crops, and is now collaborating with researchers in North America, Europe, and New Zealand to make the technology more accessible by designing practical devices for field applications, and through pairing the application technology with autonomous agricultural robots.

Miguel is an economist who specializes in marketing and food distribution, pricing and price analysis, and quantitative methods. Harvey R. Chaplin Eminent Scholar in Beverage Management

Barry is the first holder of the Harvey R. Chaplin Eminent Scholar’s Chair in Beverage Management at Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. In this position he has developed new graduate and undergraduate beverage classes to expand the offerings of the Beverage Management curriculum. Barry is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Emeritus Adjunct Professor of Enology at California State University, Fresno. He has had a long association –over forty years– with the wine industry, conducting research in analytical methodology applied to grapes, juices, and wines.

Morten Hallgren

Morten is a native of Copenhagen, Denmark. He grew up on Domaine de Castel Roubine, a 250 acre estate in Cotes de Provence producing about 40,000 cases annually. After working on a PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics in the U.S., he returned to France in 1993. He completed his Diplome Nationale d’Oenologue at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Agronomie in Montpellier. After an internship at Chateau Cos d’Estournel in St. Estephe and winemaking positions for Cordier Estates in Ft. Stockton, TX and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, he held the position of chief winemaker at Dr. Frank’s for six years before concentrating on Ravines Wine Cellars. Together with his wife Lisa, Morten founded Ravines in 2002 as perhaps the first winery in the Finger Lakes to focus on traditional dry wines. Currently, Ravines farms about 125 acres of vineyards and produces about 25,000 cases annually. His wines have consistently gained accolades and have contributed to bringing more recognition to the wines of the Finger Lakes.

Ken Hardcastle

Ken was born in Stoneham, MA and grew up in Southern California. He received his undergraduate degree at Occidental College, CA, Master’s degree from Queens College, NY, and PhD in structural geology from UMass Amherst. He is an independent exploration geologist scientist and for the past 30 years, when he has not been looking at rocks or seeking out groundwater deposits, he has been making beer, wine, cider and mead. In 2010, Ken made it official when he became partner and vintner at Hermit Woods Winery. He can still be found looking at rocks, but this passion is now shared with his passion for the art and science of making wine, cider and mead.

Tremain has been the viticulture research and extension associate at Virginia Tech since 2010 where he generates and delivers innovative research to Virginia grape growers. He is responsible for developing programs and outreach for new and experienced grape farmers in Virginia’s growing wine industry. His current research focuses on vineyard cost flow projections, evaluation of protective culture in vineyards, and vineyard fertilizer programs.

Tremain completed vineyard and winery practicums in Italy (2006), New Zealand (2009) and Virginia (2007 & 2010), received his MSc in Horticulture at Virginia Tech (2010), and completed his MBA at Shenandoah University (2017). He is a third generation farmer and has helped transition the family farm in Loudoun County from dairy production to direct-to-consumer sales of pastured beef/lamb, and wine, as Zephaniah Farm Vineyard.

Molly Kelly

Molly joined Penn State University as the enology extension educator in the Department of Food Science in February 2018. She has led workshops including winery sanitation, filtration, microscopy, wine analysis and berry sensory analysis. Her research has focused on the effect of nitrogen and sulfur applications on Petit Manseng wine aroma and flavor. Current research includes the impact of the spotted lanternfly on wine quality.

Prior to this, Molly was the enology extension specialist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg VA. She also held the position of enology instructor at Surry Community College in Dobson NC, where she developed the enology curriculum and managed all aspects of the college’s 1,000-case bonded winery. Under her direction, Surry produced numerous international award-winning wines. Prior to her position at Surry, she was a biodefense team microbiologist with the New York State Department of Health.

Frederick is the winemaker, vineyard manager, and grafting manager of the Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard in New York. Since starting as an intern in 2001 under the watchful eye of Hermann J. Wiemer, he quickly became the key decision maker in every aspect of the winery, vineyard, and nursery operations. Darren joined Scott Labs in December 2019 and is focused on fermentation and process application support. Raised in California wine country, Darren earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from UC Santa Barbara, and performed antibody fermentations at Scripps Immunology before becoming a wine chemist at Trinchero Family Estates. He moved to manage the Central Coast offices of Vinquiry, and then became Lab Director of Enology & Quality at Terravant Wine Company, winemaking for custom crush and private label clients. After falling in love with the Columbia River Gorge, Darren moved to the Pacific Northwest. An active figure in the wine community, Darren has taught winemaking courses for VESTA and Allan Hancock Community College.

Maria grew up in South Africa on the family wine farm where filtration of wine with a pressure leaf filter was one of many chores as a teenager. She graduated with a BSc. Agric. degree specializing in Enology and Viticulture from University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2000. Maria made wine and managed vineyards all over the globe–South Africa, Australia, France, USA–for 13 years.

She has been working for Scott Laboratories of California for the last eight years and is currently part of the newly minted Beverage Integrity and Filtration department within Scott Labs where the focus is on sustainable filtration and stabilization technologies with applications such as wine, cider, beer (including seltzer), distilled spirits, RTD cocktails and others.

While studying plant biology at Connecticut College and furthering his viticulture and enology education through the University of California, Davis, Conor honed his focus to look at wine from a bottom to bottle perspective. This led him to viticultural experiences in both the Alexander Mountains and Sonoma Valley before moving into wine production, working harvests with the Jackson Estates and Stonestreet Winery in California, as well as Yangarra Estate Vineyards and Hickinbotham Wines in South Australia. Conor joined the Unionville team in 2016 to pursue his dream of making wine on the East Coast and immersing himself in the challenges of winegrowing in an underdog region. Conor has overseen the technical farming and production at Unionville for three years, becoming head winemaker in January 2019.

Joyce has been professionally involved with eastern viticulture since the early 1980s and has worked or consulted for vineyards and wineries in MD, NC, PA, RI, TN and VA. Her experience includes all aspects of vineyard management, business planning, winery design, plus a short time as winemaker. Her business partner and husband, Stephen Rigby, provides the winemaking expertise for the business. In addition to consulting, Joyce oversees day-to-day vineyard operations and Stephen oversees winemaking at Boxwood Estate Winery in Middleburg. Joyce is a member of the Virginia Vineyards Association, the Maryland Grape Growers Association, and the American Society of Enology and Viticulture–Eastern Section.

Vijay Singh, PhD

With a PhD in Biochemical Engineering, Vijay spent most of his career developing processes to manufacture pharmaceuticals using fermentation. In 1996 he developed a novel way of culturing cells in disposable bags and founded the company Wave Biotech to manufacture and market this device known as the Wave Bioreactor. In 2013 he discovered winemaking, and took the UC Davis courses, but wanted to apply his chemical engineering and disposable technology background to winemaking. This resulted in a novel device that makes winemaking easy, requires almost no water, minimal labor and little investment. In 2014 he set up a commercial winery, Sky Acres Winery, to test and develop the winemaking machine now named the GOfermentor. The winery has won numerous awards over the last three years. In 2017 the commercial manufacture and sale of the GOfermentor began and in 2019 a home/microvinification version was introduced. Vijay has over 20 patents in diverse fields ranging from winemaking, biotechnology, gunsights, hydroponics and mixing.

Chris Stamp

Chris has spent much of his life in the grape and wine business. He grew up on his family’s grape farm in Watkins Glen, NY. His interest in winemaking was piqued by the newly burgeoning small wineries in the area. Summer jobs at Glenora and Taylor Wine Company augmented his education while he attained a BS in Food Science from Cornell University. He began his winemaking career as winemaker at a small winery in the Finger Lakes. This was followed by a four year stint as extension and research associate at Ohio State University (OARDC, Wooster, Ohio).

In 1989, Chris moved back to the Finger Lakes to help his family start Lakewood Vineyards. Over the years Lakewood has grown to an annual production of over 100,000 gallons, producing a wide range of wines from vinifera to mead. He is an occasional contributor to Wines & Vines magazine and has given dozens of winemaking presentations. Chris and his wife Elizabeth are also sole proprietors of Lakewood Cork, importing and selling high quality wine corks in the Eastern U.S. They have three children (Ben, Abby and Amelia), 1 dog (Piper) and three horses (Buddy, George and Remi). Research Enologist and Extension Coordinator

Joy works with Virginia winemakers to plan, conduct and evaluate practical experiments in the winery and share results with the winemaking community. She also produces a small line of wines under her own name. Prior to her post at the VWRE, Joy was the enologist and winemaker at Michael Shaps Wineworks in Charlottesville, VA. Joy holds a PhD in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has worked in the Virginia Wine industry since 2013.

With a degree in both Biology and Mathematics from Miami University, Joshua has led several research projects including Hyphomycetes in the Ohio River and their interaction with waste water treatment and microflora presence off the coast of Puerto Rico. He now works as a sanitation and biofilm remediation expert for the Belgium biotech company Realzyme. New research has led to wine-specific enzymatic cleaners for prevention of contamination and extension of membrane life span and efficiency. In his spare time Joshua studies viticulture and enology. He is establishing a 7-acre berry farm in southwest Ohio which will be used to provide unique varieties of berries to the ever-growing fruit wine sector and his local community.

Sam has over 25 years of experience in software, with a particular focus on Enterprise Architecture and Enterprise Application Integration. Since 2013, Sam and WineryConnect have worked with wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries to develop broad “virtual IT department” solutions for beverage producers.

Ankida Ridge Vineyards is one of the East Coast’s premier Pinot Noir producers and Christine is passionate about implementing environmentally sensitive practices in their vineyard and balancing the considerations of nature with the pragmatism of producing a crop in the humid Mid-Atlantic regions. She embraces the French philosophy of “la lutte raisonnée,” the reasoned struggle. Christine and Dennis Vrooman, along with their winemaker son, Nathan, proved that the high elevations of the cooler, rocky Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia have the potential to become a prominent world-class Pinot Noir producing region. Ankida Ridge is recognized with high praise in Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book 2020, and their Pinot Noir was recognized as a “Top Ten Hot Brand 2017” by Wine Business Monthly. Ankida has also been an invited winery to Oregon’s acclaimed International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC).

Christine has been active in the Virginia wine industry, including serving on the VA Sustainability Workbook Committee, the Virginia Wine Marketing Grant Committee, writing for Virginia’s Grape Press Leaning Green column, and serving as a passionate ambassador of the Virginia wine industry.

Yuri received his PhD in Plant Pathology / Biotechnology with a focus on Viticulture at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna (Italy) where he participated in many national and international projects and publications. After several years in private and public technical consulting service in both the agronomic and technical fields, he is currently employed at Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo where he focuses on sales and technical business in the vine nursery sector.
